Ridley Scotts 10 bedste film – rangeret

Ridley Scott boasts one of the film industry’s most impressive resumes, and at the age of 85, he shows no signs of slowing down. We rank the best films of the ‘Napoleon’-currently active director – with a director’s cut at the top.

Even though Ridley Scott has a number of mediocre and lackluster films to his name, he remains one of the most respected veterans in American cinema. His breakthrough with ‘Alien’ in 1979 was so significant that any true film lover still has to tip their hat.

Therefore, lesser works like ‘1492: Conquest of Paradise,’ ‘Body of Lies,’ and ‘A Good Year’ don’t really dent Ridley Scott’s status.

And the fact that he is still churning out blockbusters at the age of 85 only adds to the reverence.

In celebration of the theatrical release of ‘Napoleon’ starring Joaquin Phoenix, we highlight the 10 strongest titles in the master’s filmography.

10. 'LEGEND'

On one hand, the narrative in Scott’s sci-fi folly ‘Legend’ is somewhat inflated nonsense, but that doesn’t matter much when he serves up Satan in fantastic makeup, unicorns, and production design that practically begs to be consumed visually.

Tim Curry is a pure delight as Satan, and one shivers with delight every time he graces the screen with his enormous bull horns (probably made of cardboard so he could keep his head upright during shooting?!) and fiery red makeup, while alternately fawning, roaring, and growling.

‘Legend’ showcases Scott’s visual sensibility and visually rich imagination, and one might wonder why it took him more than 25 years to return to the sci-fi genre with 2012’s differently humorless ‘Prometheus’ (minus the first five minutes where Michael Fassbender’s android indulges his inner David Lean fascination). In comparison, ‘Legend’ has immense, effortless glory.

It’s almost refreshing that its story limps like a three-legged dog, allowing you to be fully seduced by its considerable guilty pleasure potential.

9. 'MATCHSTICK MEN'

‘Matchstick Men’ is an upbeat crime caper where Nicolas Cage gets to unleash his inner OCD child to the fullest, all while devising and executing one scam after another. His existential maladjustment is disguised as furious manic energy outbursts, as seen in the scene where he’s on the verge of losing control at a pharmacy.

It’s a role tailor-made for Cage, and therefore, a must-see for those who find Cage in overdrive to be blissfully entertaining. If you want to avoid that kind of thing, approach ‘The Matchstick Men’ with caution…

‘The Matchstick Men’ has been described as ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ meets ‘Rainman,’ and that’s not entirely off the mark, as long as you don’t expect a completely endearing and manageable form of autism in Cage’s case.”
